What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach that integrates values and mindfulness strategies to recognize, accept and observe difficult thoughts and emotions. ACT aims to enhance psychological flexibility, self-acceptance and problem solving skills in order to manage distressing emotions and thoughts.

ACT is based on the foundation of Acceptance. We tend to get so consumed by avoiding, or eliminating our negative thoughts and feelings that we spend more time and energy on avoidance, rather than in the experiences that can bring us joy and meaning. ACT encourages individuals to recognize their thoughts as thoughts, and not facts. By creating distance between our thoughts and our beliefs, we begin to shift towards intentional responses and acceptance. ACT works to define core values that individuals possess and ways to stay committed to those values as a guide for decision, actions, and beliefs- even when faced with discomfort and hardship.
